City Sports today announced that its newest retail location is scheduled to open the last week of September at 475 Washington Street in Wellesley, Mass. which is set to be one of the Boston-based brand’s most innovative and tailored consumer shopping experiences to date.

City Sports plans to celebrate the official Wellesley store launch with a free consumer event, which will include music, refreshments and over $1,000 in prizes for party participants.

“At City Sports, we pride ourselves on giving our customers a uniquely unmatched shopping experience, and each new store opening is a chance to up the ante in that arena,” said City Sports President and CEO Jeff Connor. “Being a Boston-born company, we are especially excited that this new space will be showcased right in our own backyard in Wellesley.”
At over 10,000 square feet, City Sports’ Wellesley hub is set to provide the ultimate shopping experience for the brand’s athletic clientele. The store is located on Washington Avenue on the site of the former St. Moritz location. ”The space is iconic in Wellesley, and we are excited to transform it into an exciting new experience for the community,” Connor said. ”We have once again engaged our architecture and design partners at Gensler to take it to the next level.”

City Sports and Gensler have previously collaborated on the retailer’s dramatic Georgetown store in Washington, DC and, most recently, on the redesign of City Sport’s downtown Philadelphia location. ”We took the opportunity to bring the City Sports urban aesthetic to the outside of the store with a combination of wood, metal and transparency,” said Julie Reker, associate at Gensler, of the Wellesley space.

The Wellesley store design features a dramatic facade with a wraparound steel awning and tall windows that showcase the interior design and product assortment. Inside, the space will house a freestanding footwear wall and an interactive electronics room that offers shoppers the use of in-store iPads to access information about products on the company’s website as well as the ability to wear-test headphones. Other store features include an “energy station” with sports drinks and snacks, and lockers for participants in City Sports’ group activities, including its popular weekly Run Club and Boot Camp series which will be launching in October.

Aptly situated on the Boston Marathon route, the Wellesley store will house a haven for runners and other sport-specific enthusiasts as it displays a multi-boutique feel in the form of designated shopping areas separated by activity and gender. One area will include a specially curated woman’s section, which will offer private fitting rooms and a communal table, featuring an iMac, that will allow for female customers to reference City Sports’ online Bra Finder which is set to launch on the brand’s website when the Wellesley store opens.

City Sports’ Wellesley opening event will take place on Saturday, October 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to all patrons. A festive and family-friendly atmosphere is planned with a DJ, treats from PinkBerry and raffles worth over $1,000 of in-store merchandise, including a BOB™ stroller and a GoPro™ digital camera. The first 100 customers to enter the store at the start of the event will also receive a free City Sports gift bag and have the chance to win the brand’s signature grand prize: one free pair of shoes a month for an entire year.

For more information and updates on the Wellesley store opening, please visit the official City Sports website at citysports.com.

The workshop series provides a practical program that provides a framework, tools and techniques to rid the body of the ravaging effects of life’s everyday stressors, overcome hurtful past events and shape an empowered personal future.

Techniques to Regain Your Sanity & Reclaim Your Health will address how to change one’s physiology quickly and lastingly through the deliberate evocation of a series of biochemical reactions in the body that lower blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and adrenaline levels; counteract the unhealthy effects of fear and stress; and allow us to experience the myriad health benefits of nature’s own antidote–love and affection. Participants will also learn how to become aware of thoughts, physical and emotional attitudes, actions and behaviors without judgment, in order to move beyond conditioned responses to find calm and peace.

A mixture of lecture and experiential exercises will enrich the learning, and practitioners will be able to use these techniques with their patients immediately in their practice. Continuing education contact hours are available for nurses and allied health professionals.

A staff member of Harvard Medical School, Selhub served from 1999 until the end of 2007 as Medical Director of Mind/Body Medical Institute founded by the pioneer of mind/body research, Herbert Benson, MD, now part of the world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital. Newly named The Benson-Henry Institute for Mind/Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (BHI), Dr. Selhub now serves as a Clinical Associate for BHI/MGH. She has lectured throughout the United States and in Europe and trained healthcare professionals from all over the world. As an expert in the stress physiology and the mind/body approach to patient care, she has been involved in the training of healthcare professionals from all over the world. Dr. Selhub’s lectures are based on the mind/body connection, the physiology of stress and coping, their relationship to illness and on enhancing the love that heals.

The workshops will be conducted on March 19, 2011, April 2, 2011 and April 23, 2011 from 9 am – noon at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, MA, located at 2014 Washington Street. With the exception of the lecture on April 2, all will take place on the 2nd floor of the Shipley Auditorium. The April 2 event will be held in the Allen Riddle room, which is located off the Hospital’s parking garage.

The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) has recognized Newton-Wellesley Hospital as one of 26 ACS NSQIP participating hospitals in the United States that have achieved exemplary outcomes for surgical patient care. As a participant in ACS NSQIP, Newton-Wellesley Hospital is required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collect data that directs patient safety and the quality of surgical care improvements.

“We are thrilled to receive this recognition from the American College of Surgeons,” said Frederick Millham, MD, Chair of Surgery, Newton-Wellesley Hospital. “Our entire surgical staff works tirelessly each day to provide the highest quality of care to our patients while ensuring the highest level of patient safety.”

The ACS NSQIP recognition program commends a select group of hospitals for achieving exemplary outcome performances related to patient management in five clinical areas: DVT (deep vein thrombosis, thrombophlebitis and pulmonary embolism); cardiac incidents (cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction); Pneumonia; SSI (surgical site infections-superficial and deep incisional and organ-space SSIs); or urinary tract infection. The 26 hospitals commended achieved the distinction of attaining exemplary results in two or more of the five areas listed above. Risk-adjusted data from the June 2010 ACS NSQIP Semiannual Report were used to determine which hospitals demonstrated exemplary outcomes.

ACS NSQIP is the only nationally validated quality improvement program that measures and enhances the care of surgical patients. This program measures the actual surgical results 30 days postoperatively as well as risk adjusts patient characteristics to compensate for differences among patient populations and acuity levels. The goal of ACS NSQIP is to reduce surgical morbidity (infection or illness related to a surgical procedure) and surgical mortality (death related to a surgical procedure) and to provide a firm foundation for surgeons to apply what is known as the “best scientific evidence” to the practice of surgery. Furthermore, when adverse effects from surgical procedures are reduced and/or eliminated, a reduction in health care costs follows. ACS NSQIP is a major program of the American College of Surgeons and is currently used in over 300 hospitals.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s Department of Surgery is a vibrant, growing department with over 230 members, representing all sub-specialties. The department is capable of meeting the vast majority of needs of patients requiring surgical procedures. The collaborative relationship that exists among surgeons, nurses and administrators enables us to provide personalized service.

Currently, our operating rooms handle 15,000 cases per year, of which 70% are outpatient. Our ultra-modern surgical suites contain the latest in technology allowing our surgical staff, access to lasers, to stereotactic neurosurgery to the laparoscopy and arthroscopy. Our ambulatory surgery center is considered one of the finest in the nation according to The Riker Institute of Surgery and the Picker Institute Survey. Surgeons from throughout New England visit Newton-Wellesley to view the future of surgery.

Patients needing emergency care at Newton-Wellesley Hospital now have an easy way to find out how long the ER wait is- before they actually get there. The Hospital is introducing three new innovative tools for its patients: an Emergency Room (ER) wait time display on the Newton-Wellesley website, a Hospital iPhone application available on iTunes for download and a mobile version of the website available for many smartphones.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital has already begun displaying the current average ER wait times on the hospital’s website, www.nwh.org. The ER wait time is automatically updated every five minutes and represents the average time it takes for a patient to be placed into a treatment room to be seen by the ER practitioner on duty. Patients are triaged on arrival by a registered nurse and are then seen by an emergency medicine provider based on severity. Those determined to require immediate attention will go directly to a room. The service is meant for patients with urgent complaints, but not for those with life-threatening emergencies.

“We are happy to be able to offer our patients the tools they need to access important health information fast,” said Mark Lemons, MD, Chair, Emergency Medicine, Newton-Wellesley Hospital. “Our patient population is technologically savvy, so we thought this would be quite beneficial to them in our continuous effort to provide high quality care.”

At the end of October the Hospital rolled out its new iPhone application that will feature ER wait times, a pre-registration function, maps and directions, general information about Newton-Wellesley Hospital and more. In addition to the “app,” many smart phone users will have access to a new mobile version of www.nwh.org for easier site navigation.

According to industry experts, there is definitely an advantage to publishing ER wait times “live” versus a texting service. “Not everyone has texting capabilities and even if they do, they have to remember the text number or look it up, which wastes valuable time,” said Sandra Fancher, Vice President of Client Strategy at MedTouch. “Utilizing a mobile app also allows patients to obtain other useful information – not just ER wait times.”

Newton-Wellesley Hospital is a full system member of Partners HealthCare System, Inc. PHCS), a nonprofit organization that includes acute care hospitals Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospitals, The North Shore Medical Center, and specialty hospitals McLean Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, as well as Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare, and the community-based doctors and hospitals of Partners Community HealthCare, Inc.

Local residents will no longer have to travel to Boston for radiation therapy now that Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH) has opened the Joan and James Vernon Cancer Center. Both Dr. Jeffrey Wisch, Medical Director, Vernon Cancer Center, Associate Chief of Hematology/Oncology, and Director of Inpatient Oncology; and Dr. James Vernon, long time Newton-Wellesley Hospital surgeon and for whom this Center is named, are Wellesley and Weston residents respectively. Newton-Wellesley Hospital has always provided excellent medical care for cancer patients, including general oncology, surgery, and chemotherapy, but the missing piece had been radiation therapy. Since 50 percent of all cancer treatment requires radiation, this is a critical component of a cancer program. The Joan and James Vernon Cancer Center (VCC) will provide a comprehensive cancer program to address our community’s needs. The VCC, located on the site of the former Emergency Department, will occupy approximately 25,000 square feet on two levels in the main hospital.

Having radiation oncology available on the Newton-Wellesley Hospital campus facilitates the collaborative approach with MGH and provides multidisciplinary care for cancer patients. Patients’ quality of life will be enhanced, because they can now receive all of their treatment at a convenient location in familiar surroundings. The Vernon Cancer Center will also allow patients access to advanced cancer care from Newton-Wellesley oncologists – close to home.
